Moissanite is a brilliant and highly durable gemstone composed of silicon carbide (SiC). Naturally, it is scarce, first discovered in a meteorite crater by French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893, so the vast majority of moissanite used in jewelry today is created in laboratories. Moissanite is a near-colorless to colored stone that is prized for its exceptional brilliance and "fire" (flashes of rainbow color). It has a higher refractive index than a diamond, meaning it exhibits more sparkle.
